Light Up the Night
Light Up the Night, for Life!
An Electrifying Music & Fireworks Extravaganza
This Friday, 7-10 PM
Savannah, Ga. - The Westin Savannah Harbor together with the American Pyrotechnics Association is pleased to announce an electrifying charity event set for Friday, September 24th.
Light Up the Night for Life will feature the spirited Salsa and Merengue rhythms of Grupo Kachimbo, riverside at The Westin, followed by the largest fireworks show the City has ever had. Tapas-style food and a full bar round out the evening's offerings.
Kachimbo is a ten-piece band playing Afro-caribbean Salsa and Merengue music, sure to get your foot a-tappin' and your hips a-swayin'.
The event is open to the public and costs just $10, which includes a $5 food and beverage credit and a $5 donation to benefit the not-for-profit agencies "Donate Life Georgia" and "The Nicholas Green Foundation," both of which are dedicated to encouraging organ and tissue donation.
The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) is gathering over 300 of the leading fireworks professionals world-wide in Savannah, September 21-25, and approached The Westin about partnering on a charity event for which the APA would provide their specialty - fireworks - and The Westin would provide their specialty - world-class event planning.
Thus was born: Light Up the Night for Life! Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move to the groove, then relax as the APA lights up the sky!
The special fireworks extravaganza has been produced and choreographed by Falcon Fireworks, Guyton, Georgia (member of the APA).
The adjacent Savannah International Trade & Convention Center will offer parking at $3/car, $1 of which also goes to the charities.
Your chairs and picnic are blankets welcome, but please leave the pets and coolers at home.
According to Bluffton, SC bandleader, Jose "Bebo" Lopez, "kachimbo" in Puerto Rican, signifies the middle section of a salsa song where the percussionists take over and give the singers a rest. The ten-piece band has a smooth sound specializing in Afrocaribbean Salsa and Merengue music, of which band leader Lopez says "We promise our fans that Grupo Kachimbo will make you dance.
Donate Life Georgia
The Donate Life Georgia registry was created in 2008 to allow Georgians an easy and user-friendly means of joining the state's registry. Georgians can join the registry through this Web site, when renewing their driver license online, or when obtaining/renewing their license at a local driver license office. You can also join the registry by calling Donate Life Georgia directly at 1-866-57-SHARE (1-866-577-4273) and request a donor registry form. If you already have "organ donor" on your driver license, you still are encouraged to join the new registry to ensure your previous designation is documented.
You have the power to donate life! Sign up today to become an organ, tissue, and eye donor. Your generosity can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance dozens more through tissue and eye donation.
The Nicholas Green Foundation
The Nicholas Green Foundation, set up by the Green family, is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the cause of organ and tissue donation around the world. It does this by spreading information to increase awareness of the shortage of donors everywhere. It can also support a broad range of children's causes. It produces videos and helps organize special events.
A seven year-old boy from California, Nicholas Green, was killed by highway robbers in 1994 while vacationing in Italy with his family. His parents agreed to donate his organs and corneas, which went to seven Italians waiting for transplants. Reg and Maggie Green spoke openly to the media, with no bitterness, about their loss and decision. The world took the story--and the Greens--to its heart. Organ donations in Italy have quadrupled since Nicholas was killed so that thousands of people are alive who would have died.
